DESCRIPTION:1937 Plymouth Series P3 Custom Convertible If you compare this car to the one that rolled off the assembly line in Detroit 70 years ago, you will find almost no dimension the same, no material of original construction except for the 11 gauge steel body unspoiled by the passage of time. Here is a fully modified, completely detailed, masterfully reconstructed ragtop that is just what an old time MOPAR fan might dream of. It was the dream of the owner nearly 30 years ago when a pristine body was located to begin this project. It took several years and tens of thousands of dollars to realize his dream, but when the car was completed it immediately became a trophy magnet at shows all over the American Southwest, often carrying home Best of Show credentials. Featured on the covers of rodding magazines over time, the car still draws huge crowds anxious to see a real hot rod that is something other than a Ford or Chevy. This car has a lot more than you might expect to find in a rod, though. So maybe we ought to call it a custom. Whatever we call it, it is magnificent. Let’s look at the features… Starting with the underpinnings, it has a boxed and gusseted X member frame set up with a Chrysler torsion bar independent front suspension, a 9 inch Ford differential, Mustang II rack and pinion front steering (new in 2017), and 4 wheel power disk brakes. This is a gentleman’s hot rod – it wears a Bowtie in the form of a Speed & Performance tuned port injected 350 CID small block producing a dynamometer tested 390 horsepower at 5500 rpm. This power is fed to a Gm 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission. This Mayflower don’t need no stinkin’ Hemi – it does just fine with all that Chevy and Ford stuff. A big aluminum cross flow radiator keeps things cool under the hood and the dual exhaust is threaded through the frame, tucked up and away from the road. The body modifications are numerous, but here are a few: This Plymouth started life as a P3 business coupe. The top was shorn, custom made convertible bows and a cranberry Mercedes cloth retractable top were hand crafted to make this a one-off convertible. Then, the grille shell and aft roll pan were modified with custom metalwork. Extraneous trim was removed and the body was nosed, decked, shaved, and smoothed. Even the bumpers were jettisoned so that the glitter of chrome is restricted to direct the viewer to the unique features of this ride. 1941 Plymouth headlights were grafted to the front fenders, custom taillights were frenched into the aft fenders, and special inboard exhaust ports were crafted to blend into the body lines. Radial tires surround 17 inch custom alloy rims produced by Colorado Custom. Of course this beautiful droptop has ice cold air conditioning, a sound system, and awesome personal comfort for driver and passengers as they lounge in soft, bolstered, power adjustable bucket seats covered in burgundy marine vinyl, highlighted with ostrich grained inserts. The seat backs tilt forward to reveal a handy storage area, and the spacious trunk, lined in cranberry leather, has plenty of room for luggage on those long road trips. A LeCarra leather wrapped banjo steering wheel rides atop a polished Ididit tilt steering column, and a custom instrument bezel houses ivory faced gauges. This tested and proven convertible has given its owner many miles of smiles. It still looks fresh, and it still wins its share of rewards. One thing is for certain. If you are a serious street rod buyer, you won’t find a more unique, dependable, ride anywhere. To be sure - this Plymouth ROCKS!
